As I heard that The RAUCOUS RED ROOSTERS are about to record and release a second album, I thought it was overdue to review their self-titled debut album (Mexicanos Records/Self released). Moreover at it is really good stuff. If you havent heard of this German Three-Piece yet, it might help to mention, that bassplayer Heiner is also playing in the EVIL DALTONS, who are one of Germanys Psychobilly-Institutions, founded almost 30 years ago. For the RAUCOUS RED ROOSTERS he joined forces with a former Punk-drummer and a blues-addicted guitar player. The result is a mixture of different appealing styles. Bluesy Billy from the Psychogarage with thick and rough rockabilly roots. The band that was founded in 2019 gathers at the point, where blues is not a sophisticated hobby for old men that are sipping on medium water but an expression of a philosophy and lifestyle that rises straight from the heart and the belly and at times even the realms that are to be found underneath.

I agree, this does not sound very ground breaking. But who gives a shit as long as it sounds good? And it does, starting with some introducing words about the blues and the rockabillyficated LINK WRAY cover „Rumble“ and the following swamp blues classic „King Bee“, first recorded by SLIM HARPO in 1957. It does as well, when it comes to the self penned material like „Graveyard Waltz“ that kicks of with hollering drums and turns out to be a stomping number that shows the psychobilly-backbone of the band with a nice alternation of stops and dynamic outbreaks, but surrounded by old school sounds from the blues mausoleum. This mixture of dirty stuff with traditional influences also marks „Love Is A 4 Letter Word“ that comes around as a rough rocking track with some garage undertones. DELTA BOMBERS haunted by the spirit of the CRAMPS? Its not easy to find an appropriate comparison all the more if it should sum up the whole record that ranges from the slower Blues „Sin City“, including harp and a twanging guitar-solo to the definitely CRAMPed „Voodoo Stomp“ that will most probably make every zombie lose countenance. Maybe the best description is given by the song title „Bluestrash“.

The huge range of differend facets also covers the more modern, catchy „No Time For Excuses“ that is closer to some more pop RESTLESS-recordings than to rough-and-ready underground music and the fast and powerful rockabilly of „Mojo Boogie“ or the country-reminiscences contained in „Blues In My Vains“. All that does not leave any space for boredom. It does not lead to confusion either. The band is recognizable in every moment. Quite natural everyone will have his favourite kind of –repertoire among the ROOSTER-recordings. As for me, I especially like the stuff that is more psycho and garage-related. „My Werewolf Baby“ for example is a delicious little monster. Folks who are into bluesy tunes will pick other tunes. In the end it all goes hand in hand and makes a very promising debut thats absolutely worth being checked out. I am curious what the next record will bring.

Psycho Geflügel bekommt den Blues: Das Debüt der RAUCOUS RED ROOSTERS ist immer noch erhältlich

Als ich hörte, dass The RAUCOUS RED ROOSTERS dabei sind, ein zweites Album aufzunehmen und rauszuhauen, dachte ich mir, dass es längst überfällig sei, ihr selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum (Mexicanos Records/Selbstveröffentlichung) hier vorzustellen. Davon abgesehen, dass es sich um wirklich guten Stoff handelt.

Falls Ihr noch nichts von diesem Trio aus deutschen Landen gehört habt, hilft es vielleicht zu erwähnen, dass Bassist Heiner auch bei den EVIL DALTONS spielt, die bekannt sein dürften. Schließlich handelt es sich um eine Psychobilly-Institutionen, die vor fast 30 Jahren gegründet wurde. Für die RAUCOUS RED ROOSTERS hat sich der Mann mit einem ehemaligen Punk-Schlagzeuger und einem bluessüchtigen Gitarristen zusammengetan. Das Ergebnis ist eine Mischung aus verschiedenen erfreulichen Stilrichtungen. Bluesiger Billy aus der Psychogarage mit dicken und rohen Rockabilly-Wurzeln. Die 2019 gegründete Band versammelt sich dort, wo Blues kein mondänes Hobby für alte Männer ist, die an Medium-Wasser nippen, sondern Ausdruck einer Philosophie und eines Lebensstils, der direkt aus dem Herzen und dem Bauch und manchmal auch aus der Region darunter.

Richtig. Das klingt nicht unbedingt bahnbrechend. Aber wen interessiert das, solange es gut klingt? Und das tut es, beginnend mit ein paar einführenden Worten über den Blues und dem rockabillyfizierten LINK WRAY-Cover „Rumble“ und dem darauffolgenden Sumpf-Blues-Klassiker „King Bee“, im Original aufgenommen von SLIM HARPO im Jahre 1957. Nicht mindert gut gefällt die Band, wenn sie selbst geschriebenem Material wie „Graveyard Waltz“ verabreicht, das mit donnernden Drums anhebt und sich sich als stampfende Nummer entpuppt, die mit einem schönen Wechsel von Breaks und dynamischen Ausbrüchen das Psychobilly-Rückgrat der Band zeigt, stets umgeben von Oldschool-Sounds aus dem Blues-Mausoleum. Diese Mischung aus dreckigen Zutaten mit traditioneller Anmutung kennzeichnet auch „Love Is A 4 Letter Word“, das als rau rockender Track mit Garagenuntertönen daherkommt. Werden hier die DELTA BOMBERS vom Geist der CRAMPS heimgesucht? Es ist nicht leicht, einen passenden Vergleich zu finden, umso mehr, wenn er die ganze Scheibe zusammenfassen soll, die vom langsameren Blues „Sin City“ inklusive Harp und twangy Gitarrensolo bis zum definitiv verCRAMPten „Voodoo Stomp“ reicht, das jeden Zombie die Contenance verlieren lassen dürfte. Die vielleicht beste Beschreibung liefert der Songtitel „Bluestrash“.

Die große Bandbreite an unterschiedlichen Facetten, schließt auch das modernere, eingängigere „No Time For Excuses“ ein, das ein bisschen an poppige RESTLESS-Aufnahmen näher steht als derber Underground-Musik, das schnelle und kraftvolle Rockabilly-Stück „Mojo Boogie“ oder die Country-Reminiszenzen in „Blues In My Vains“. Da kommt keine Langeweile auf. Die Vielfalt führt aber auch nicht zu Verwirrung. Die Handschrift der Band bleibt immer erkennbar. Natürlich wird jeder sein Lieblingsrepertoire unter den ROOSTER-Aufnahmen haben. Was mich betrifft, so mag ich besonders die Songs, die eher psycho- und garagen lastig sind. Das „My Werewolf Baby“ etwa ist ein leckeres kleines Monster. Leute, die auf bluesige Musik stehen, werden andere Nummern wählen. Am Ende geht alles Hand in Hand und ergibt ein sehr vielversprechendes Debüt, das es absolut wert ist, in Ohrenschein genommen zu werden. Ich bin gespannt, was die nächste Platte bringen wird.
